The history of the spelling of this area was mentioned in a book that I bought. Mackinaw City, and the bridge are with the 'aw' spelling, and the island is Mackinac (still pronounced 'aw') this is to make it clear for postal delivery. And, you always know when someone doesn't know this little bit of history because they call is MackiNAC Island, which it is not. :)
How do you describe Mackinac Island to someone who's never been there? A step back in time. No cars. Rental bikes are everywhere, so are fudge shops, hourse drawn taxis, and more flowers than you can ever imagine. Things here are pretty, prestine, crisp. You want to take a picture of everything because everything is worthy of being in a photo but you can't get it all in a 4x6.

Brick walkways, flowers, freshly painted hotels, restaurants and pretty places to shop...
You have to rent bikes to experience the island. 8 miles around the outside and an easier ride if you go clockwise around the island. Evan was on a tag-a-long bike, and when 'it's by the hour to rent,' you want to get a move on! Thanks Mom for the bikes!
A quick little rest at a half way point. We had 4 1/2 miles to go and had the coastline to our left the whole way. The view never gets old.
We stopped several times to enjoy the view or the water but this time, the shoes were off. I love watching Evan and this Grandma have their special moments. Then I went and joined in. The shore had very, very small rocks that would have made walking on them impossible if barefooted. The water was so beautiful and comfortable.
This picture was taken while riding my bike, it's no wonder I didn't have an accident as many of these were taken while riding with one hand and looking in another direction. That one little sailboat with its crisp white sails made for the perfect postcard picture. And though you can't see it here, you know that view goes on forever in either direction. Lake Huron, 23,000 square miles of water. I read it on a t-shirt. Pretty Impressive.

A taxi and a tophat! Gotta love it. Glad I didn't crash. This again was another one of my photos while taken on a bike!
Bikes have numbers on them. If you park and shop, you have to remember your number so you don't drive off on someone else's rental! Look at all those bikes, and Mom.
More flowers! Can you stand it! Everything is just so pretty and breathtaking!

The Grand Hotel sits in the middle of the island and is more than 100 years old. Its fantastic porch used to be open to the public, but now it will set you back $10 if you want to go inside and aren't a registered guest. The grounds are magnificent!
